Winter in the Sauerland, the largest ski area north of the Alps, has a very special charm. Less than an hour's drive from the Rhine and Ruhr regions, here in Lennestadt and Kirchhundem, away from the hustle and bustle of the big winter sports resorts, beginners and families in particular will find good conditions for an eventful winter outing.
The floodlit lifts at Hohe Bracht and Olpe-Fahlenscheid offer skiing fun without long waiting times.
The cross-country skiing area in Kirchhundem is located at the Rhein-Weser-Turm at an altitude of 680 metres, directly on the "Rothaarsteig". This is the starting point for an extensive network of well-maintained cross-country trails. The "Rothaarsteig" crosses the ridge of the Rothaargebirge and links the Sauerland with the Wittgensteiner Bergland. In winter, when there is enough snow, this high trail becomes the "Rothaarloipe", with fantastic views.
The ski area at Hohe Bracht, 600 metres above sea level, has a ski slope with a lift and floodlights, as well as well-groomed cross-country trails around the viewing tower.
For children and adults, there are toboggan runs in most of the resorts. Winter walkers can enjoy long and varied walks throughout the region.
